A Humble Life (Two People)

Three-channel video Installation, Super8 film convert to HD video, color, sound, 2024

A Humble Life (Two People)” attempts to create space for mourning and seeks a genealogical path to history. A diary of the deceased occupies the center of the frame, whose text is occasionally illuminated by fireworks in between prolonged moments of darkness and silence. Are the fireworks for celebration or mourning? The text is as indistinguishable as disordered and misplaced emotions, but even in the most intimate narrative, memory desires to be seen, but that desire has to be illuminated through a medium.

Sound serves as the discovery and reproduction of the “medium” of memory. In the image inside the soft curtain, an open music album finally releases a melody it has preserved for 34 years—the theme song of the 1990 Asian Games held in Beijing, “The Magnificence of Asia.” Due to a weak power supply, the music quickly deteriorates into an indistinguishable monotone and becomes a glitched sound until it fades, tracing the long process of waning. The concrete nature of objects and the abstract nature of sound form a contrasting relationship, chiseling a passage through time and transforming into a "field of mourning".
